Description:
A modern reconstruction of a colonial-era concept, the flintlock musket is a black-powder weapon designed to fire a lead (or other soft metal) ball. A built-in piece of flint in the hammer makes a spark when it strikes the steel plate in front of it, igniting the weapon's powder charge and firing the bullet. This is a breech-loaded firearm, meaning that the powder and ball are loaded in the "breech" just on front of the firing mechanism, making it faster to load than a muzzle-loader where powder and shot are poured down the barrel and forced into place with a ramrod. A practiced user can load and fire 6 to 8 shots per minute. It has a smoothbore barrel, which reduces range and accuracy; effective range for reliably aimed shots is 50 to 75 yards.Aside from the loading mechanism shown in the picture, it looks like the muskets used in the Revolutionary or Napoleonic wars.
